Weblog entry #57 for ajt
Microsoft and Novell have signed a pact. It's all over the news and lots of people are speculating what will happen. I think Microsoft wants a slice of the "Linux" action, and this allows them to see if there is money to be made without actually taking much risk or spending much money. My predictions are:
- After sucking all the know-how out of Novell, Microsoft will either launch their own version of Linux (stabbing Novell in the back) or conclude it's not for them and leave Novell high and dry.
- I expect Novell to come off worse from the deal, their are virtually no happy Microsoft partners, they all get stabbed in the back eventually.
- I expect Debian/debians market share to increase. Debian isn't owned by anyone so it can't be bought or controlled. Individuals and small companies like this, because the rules don't get changed on you when you least expect it.
In practice I don't expect much to happen in the short term. It's pretty much a non-event, like Oracle's stupid attempt to sink Red Hat. Longer term it's allowing the Beast to learn more about that which it doesn't really understand.

Over time I found Windows increasingly annoying, frustrating and expensive to use. I tried Linux as a server and found it easier to use than Windows, finally I switched to Linux as desktop system. I don't think Debian Etch is the perfect desktop operating system, but for me it is a sufficiently more productive environment than either Windows NT4/2K/XP for me to use it daily.
I now use a desktop and server operating system that is for me a better solution, a cheaper solution and morally superior. I don't pretend to believe that Linux is the best solution for everyone but it is for me.
If Microsoft produced a good operating system, Linux based or otherwise I'd consider it - in fact work would impose it on me for sure. It would have to be vastly superior to Debian to make me switch back at home, however I don't think I could ever stomach Microsoft's lack of morality and their dreadful attitude towards their own customers again.
