Weblog entry #58 for ajt
We need some one to do a small project at work. I could easily do it myself, but I don't have enough time. We advertised on jobs.perl.org yesterday and the CVs are rolling in already. Even though we don't require attendance on site for the work, we would require people to come in for a meeting at the start and for the deployment. The first CVs I've got have been from keen people on the otherside of the world, which rules them out.
I've just edited the description to make it clear that we would require at least two on-site meetings. This will I hope cut down some of the impossible applications. Personally I don't care about the person ever being on-site, but other people do...

Shame, I might have applied ;)
Still I'd agree that it makes sense to get remote people in for face-to-face visits initially, if only to make sure you're all agreed on the details and have a good idea of what is expected.

If it were me, I'd be happy to never see the person if I knew them or had a personal reference that I could trust.
It's a small simple project, so even two bargain flight on "cheap-o-jets" from anywhere in western Europe to Southampton Airport would make it unprofitable for the contractor. To make it cost effective you really need to live along the M3 corridor.
