KDE too fast?

I have two identical AMD64 PCs. One running Debian Sarge, the other Etch, both for AMD64. They both have the same kernel and the same nvidia drivers.
One one machine it gets to the end of the boot sequence, kdm starts, a few seconds later it aborts, and a console login screen is presented. A manual start of kdm and all is okay. Sometimes it works okay, but mostly it fails.
The second machine works in the reverse, mostly it works perfectly, but now and then kdm fails.
In both cases when kdm fails it complains that there is no suitable screen to use.
At the moment I've put a pause before kdm and it seems to help, but not 100%.
Strange....?

Are you sure your xorg/xfree86 config correponds to your screen/graphics card?

All is okay, wait a few seconds and manually restart kdm and it works perfectly. Nothing changed in between the failed and sucessful start...
