Sarge To Etch 1
Posted by ajt on Sun 17 Dec 2006 at 21:13
Today I upgraded the first my first box from from Sarge to Etch that needs upgrading.
Etch isn't quite stable yet but it's close enough for this system.
Over the next few days I'll have to fix all the config options that got mangled, and rebuild the KDE menus, but other than a knot between KDE and SSH the upgrade went well and the box reboots okay!

I've had a couple of issues with the KDE menus as well. Mostly it's been the kcontrol and kinfocenter entries that were all dumped to lost & found. I haven't had any problems with ssh however, what issues are you referring to?

It couldn't install the new ssh packages because of a kdessh dependancy. I yanked out kdessh (from the kde metapackage), so it uninstalled all of KDE. I then installed the new SSH packages okay, kde-core, and the actual KDE packages I wanted.
This machine has a customised kmenu, so the menu work is just a case of manual rebuild - though I normally leave the Debian menu alone.
xorg was fun too. It decided I was using the proprietary nvidia driver, and selected it even though it wasn't installed in the kernel. I have installed the nvidia driver, but to get x up and running first I brought it up on the nv driver first.
I have to fix the fonts, they have gone ugly since the upgrade, but I encountered the same when my desktop system running Etch upgraded some months ago, so I know the fix for that.
It's also nice to see OO.o 2 at long last and as a native AMD64 binary, running version 1 was a bit of a pain - the chroot was a fiddle and waste of space.
Overall the upgrade took 30 minutes of download time (2M ADSL pipe), and about another half hour of install and fiddle time. I've got to tweak the udev settings, switch the nvida drivers on, and fix the menus and all will be well.
