Someone at work was installing Microsoft's super soar-away Windows Vista for "official" testing purposes today. It looked so GNOME like, at first I thought it was a Linux system running GNOME.

My colleague in IT (who doesn't use Linux) was surprised when I said it looked like a Linux desktop, he thought it looked like Mac OS X. So far he said Vista isn't too bad but with all the eye-candy enabled it's a bit sluggish if you have a cheap/low end graphics card.

It's nice to see Microsoft copying from last years Linux/GNOME. Obviously it wasn't as flash as a modern 3D Linux desktop (e.g. Beryl), that will take Microsoft another $10bn and another decade...

I always find these kind of comments about different groups copying desktop look and feel, or browser featuresets, to be a little bit unfair.

Sure they might look similar in the end, and sure there might have been some deliberate "inspiration", but at the end of the day most significant leaps in user interface take a long time to mature.

I'd imagine that Microsoft started working on their new layouts before the current version of GNOME was available to copy from..

You are probably right, it is unfair to beat Microsoft up on this. However, in a race it doesn't matter how good you look at the start, if you come in last.

I've not used Vista, so I can't comment about it really. However, it has been a very slow to-market development cycle, with little or no new features, and it's cost Microsoft billions. If I were a shareholder I'd want to know what they are doing to improve their development methods...
