ScotRail--

Arse-wipe First ScotRail didn't sell us the correct sleeper tickets. They won't correct their mistake, so we have been forced to cancel our sleeper train tickets and demand a full refund.
That means we'll be making alternative travel plans, which probably means I'll miss DebConf... So instead of attending the conference (even for a day) I'll be stuck in car somewhere between Manchester and Edinburgh...

That's a shame.
I've had good success using the train line for online bookings in the past - if it isn't too late for you to try again.

Megatrain is worth a try for cheap tickets.

Megatrain don't have any stops near where I live...
I could actually get a day time train almost point to point with no changes, but it's a 6-7 hour train ride, so I'd rather not loose two days of holiday to travelling - hence the original plan of going via sleeper train overnight.
Going by car is cheaper than train and more useful for camping anyway, it's just it's fun to travel by train, plus it's environment and driver friendly.
I'm a fundamentally a pro-train person, I like to travel by train, I go to work every day via train, I like to take the EuroStar to Paris even though it's cheaper to drive/ferry. It's just that the train companies are such a pain...!
