After many independent* favourable comments I've decided to upgrade my web server from a virtual Apache server to a Bytemark virtual server. It will involve a cost increase, but give me the ability to host several sub-domains easily and cheaply from one server and give me easy control over email for me and my family.

I'm thinking of a basic Debian 4.0 server, Apache2 for web server, Exim/Dovecot/SpamAssasin for email, OpenSSH for my access. I don't think any of this should be hard, the only thing I've not done is running email on anything other than a workstation platform.

* Though this site is hosted on a Bytemark server it has not directly influenced my decision, the independent comments came from people not associated with this site in anyway.

I recently had the pleasure of setting up exim/clamav/spamassassin as a mail gateway between the real world and an MSexChange box (I've been meaning to write up a little something for this site about it actually).

All I can say is that you've listed the right tools for the job, as they are very simple to get working together. And damn powerful too (I can see it being easy to get carried away with the configuration, but in a good way ;-)

Let us know how it all goes, as I will also be looking into virtual server hosting in the near future...

Cheers

I've been using Bytemark for awhile, I've not had any probs with them at all.
And they are currently in the process of giving your more RAM, disk space and bandwidth. :)

Upgrades to happen over the next eight weeks or so, although new customers should get them immediately.
