I'm writing a presentation to give to my LUG next Saturday. I found some useful udev stuff on this site but mostly it just works, so once I got the bit I wanted to work I didn't pay any more attention.

Having to prepare a talk forced me to think about it a lot more and figure out how it really works. So far I've done 18 slides and I've quite a few to add. If the talk goes okay, you'll be able to download it from the usual suspects, and I'll convert it into a full length article for here.

Having to teach something to someone else helps you understand the topic better than you thought and it forces you to organise your thoughts - I can recommend it to everyone.

If your audience is skilled enough, be prepared to answer to the common question "What's the difference between udev and devfs?" :-)

devfs isn't available for Debian Etch and udev is...

I'm not sure about the history - there appears to be some politicking going on - but the udev site draws attention what they feel are the differences and advantages.

I have already included a slide on Linux 2.4 and devfs and a slide on what udev brings to the 2.6 kernel that is different. However you never know what questions - if any - you'll get!
