I suppose that's ok for most people, but I prefer searching Freshmeat and Sourceforge for software, and once found, I check if that package is available as a Debian package somewhere. Sofar I found only a small number of applications not available as Debian packages and they were easy enough to get working from source.

The only problem I have seen with newbies is that they are overwhelmed with what's available on Linux. Another problem is the status of some of the software packages - a whole bunch of stuff on 'stable' release distro's is still 'beta' clasified. That doesn't mean that they are unstable, but it does confuse the issue.

Anyway, some other nice sites I can recommend:

http://repositories.alioth.debian.org/ -> Unofficial Debian Repositories
http://www.backports.org/ -> Debian Backports
http://www.apt-get.org/ -> Unofficial APT repositories

I agree with you, freshmeat.net is the second place (after 'apt-cache') where i search for software. It's a great collection of software, and with a account you can use filters yo find what you want (e.g. OSI approved, web environment...)

It is good because every tools is classfied into nicely-thought categories. However, it is bad because it is useless, if you allow me to say so.

For clueless people, merely looking at names like "Ultramonkey", "Pound", "Linux-ha" and "Drbd" does not make sense at all. They need to know at least what they are, the short description from apt-cache should be the very minimum along the names. or better how good they are.

For people who know what they are, they don't need to come here to take a look.

just my 2c.

I agree with you. the headings are nice, as I said before. I guess you also don't need to pick anything from it. I'm yet to see the real comment from whom not only take a quick look but also need to pick one from the several which are available under the nice headings...
