I have just bought a new pc based on a Athlon 64 x2, and it will be delivered at home in a few days.
I'm actually running on a p4 1,6ghz with very standard features, so this new box should bring me some interesting challenges:
    • nvidia drivers : I never installed them, I have an ATI card for the moment, but I think nvidia linux support is better;
chroot for 32 bits proprietary apps: I think this is the only way to have flash or win32codecs and i-don't-know-what-else running, isn't it?
Windows on Xen: Ahtlon 64 x2 is a HVM-enable processor, so I think I'll try to install Win2000 on it, just to be able to play to my only-pc-game-ever-bought SimCity 4... should be really interesting and probably 'headacheable' (not sure if it's correct english)
compiz/beryl: maybe I'll give it a try, just to see and compare to (beurk)Vista 3d features(/beurk), i think my GeForce 7100 with 128Mo-based graphic card will be sufficient
I'll try to post some weblogs here to relate my adventures and maybe found some help :)

see you soon from my new 'super powerful box'(TM) (or from the older one in the meantime...)

Tired of using these bloody buttons on your mouse?
Then go to the dontclick.it website, and get a try to the new 'mouse-without-button' HCI.

Explore this website, there are very interesting experiments but don't forget: please don't click! :)

Hi,

I just want to know how simply remove old configuration files, from packages in rc states?
I normally --purge packages when removing them, but if I didn't do it how to remove them without reinstalling and removing+purging?

for example,

# dpkg -l |grep xen
[...]
rc xen-utils-3.0 3.0.2+hg9697-2 XEN administrative tools
[...]
I think these rc files are keeping a bad boot line in grub/menu.lst and I want to remove them.

thanks

So, i just installed a new xen machine with testing flavour, and... so bad, the kernel can't boot dom0. It seems it's #384638 and the solution is to downgrade xen kernel to version 2.6.16-17, but where can i find it?

oh, i also tested the unstable version (2.6.17-7) and it crashed too, what can i do now? wait for a good version?

eric, disappointed :(

I got 2 VG on LVM2 on a testing/unstable system, and one of these disappeared and now i can't reuse it.
I've made some vgscan and vgchange but nothing! and my hard disks are ok, i can fdisk them and see the LVM partitions... but no way lvdisplay detects this VG...
Very strange, and so annoying...

I think i'll need to use the information contained in /etc/lvm/backup and /etc/lvm/archive...

(as this problem concerns Debian and Xen... i post it here, maybe not the best place) Hi all,

As I use testing now at home, i'm a little bit frustrated with stable at work on my desktop. So i used Xen to made a clone of my system (with dd) and 'apt-get dist-upgrade' it. All worked fine, but now i can't make my Vnc+Gdm work (made following this article), and I need it to work.

I got this kind of errors in my Xorg.0.log :

Fatal server error: xf86OpenConsole: Cannot open /dev/tty0 (No such file or directory) (WW) xf86CloseConsole: KDSETMODE failed: Bad file descriptor (WW) xf86CloseConsole: VT_GETMODE failed: Bad file descriptor

When i launch vncserver in a ssh, with

vncserver -geometry 2304x864 -depth 24
it works well... and I can connect to it

Its strange because it's exactly the same line i have in my /etc/gdm/gdm.conf Anyone got an idea ?

The French 'open-source-compliant' registrar Gandi (http://www.gandi.net) got now a new interface of his website. The old was a bit... hum strange and not really practical but this one seems really good.
Check it out!

Hi all, I'm now using Xen 3 on Debian Unstable, and i can't get my domU to have networking.

I got a pc with 2gb of RAM and 2 ethernet card. I installed debian unstable to get Xen3 via apt-get.
The installation worked and i can boot on my xenLinux kernel. I then installed a sarge domU via xen-tools (but i got the same problem with one installed with debootstrap...). My problem is on this domU, i don't have an eth0, eth1 card, but i got all the crappy that i got on dom0 : the vethX, and the vifX... i checked on the tutorials (i have mostly used the one here on Xen3 on Sid and the one there : http://julien.danjou.info/xen.html).

Can anyone help me?

@work, we work mainly with windows servers and windows applications (windows shares, printers and Outlook with Exchange... yes, not good!).
In one of our site, we got a /23 ip range, and we're getting short of addresses. But we can't really 'simply' change our ip range (decisions about ip addressing aren't in our hands) and don't really want to go physically on each of the nearly-510 machines.
Before we got the money to buy a "real" router (a Cisco/Nortel/... one), i think we can try to do a software based one.

I tried to put an openbsd box (pf is soooo simple...) to route all the traffic, but the SMB file-sharing/mounting doesn't work for the moment.

So : does anyone here know how to route windows networks with all the crappy features and protocols (file sharing, printing, Outlook with MAPI protocol, AD authentication, SUS updates, etc.) with a linux or xBSD box ?
Is it only possible ?

thanks to all.
