Hah! I managed to get my first package into debian :). I am now the maintainer for checkinstall. Please upgrade your packages if you are using unstable. For those not knowing what checkinstall is, Steve made an article about it a while ago. Wohoo!

ah. (= i upgraded checkinstall last night and built openbox from CVS, i had problem making checkinstall to build witht he last version and i couldnt get openbox (CVS) to build via dh_make.
by the way. what option do i use to tell checkinstall NOT to install after finish building the package? i cant seem to figure it out from the man page. thanks.

The option is --install=. Alternatively you could set INSTALL=0 in /etc/checkinstallrc. It seems the man page needs a rewrite, I'll get to that soon.
On the openbox issue... I can't really help unless you give more information.

hmm /etc/checkinstall and /etc/checkinstallrc in the package?
as for the openbox issue. thats ok. i installed it to /usr/local, since the source is from CVS, it has to run some weird stuff.

Yes, /etc/checkinstallrc is the configuration file for checkinstall. The file is pretty much self-documented, so you can easily tweak checkinstall.
