Weblog entry #9 for fsateler

DNS services

I've been planning for a while to buy a (.com) domain name. However, I don't want to buy hosting yet (I plan to host it on my home pc for a while). So I need dynamic dns services. I've searched a bit, and found dyndns.com, but it seems a bit expensive (you have to buy both the domain and the dynamic dns services). Are there other alternatives?

Some registrars will give you free DNS services with the purchase, such as easily.co.uk and cheapnames.co.uk.

Standalone dynamic DNS providers tend to be focused on giving a single-hostname for a dynamic IP address - people like no-ip.com so I'm not sure if they offer just DNS hosting for a static domain.

Still it might be worth searching google, somewhere like this category in DMOZ might be useful. This wikipedia page has a couple of pointers too.

If your IP remains [sic] fairly static, you might look into a service like www.zoneedit.com. They've taken a little flack for a recent buyout, but I've been using them now for a couple of years with no hassle whatsoever. Their updates are quick too, usually within 10 minutes or so. Free too :o)

Try http://www.sitelutions.com/

Its dynamic DSN service is free ,and I've been using it for a long time with at home with no problem. And a cron job script that updates your IP every hour or so to the sitelutions server via their HTTPS interface works fine.

Well recommended.

Wow, that seems ultra cheap. Too cheap, I'd say. Is there a trick somewhere?

Similar to that, I use http://afraid.org for my DNS needs. It's free, popular, reliable, and it's given me no problems. I easily set up a little cron job to update the records every hour.
