Bio: Kevin is located in Central Canada and has been using Debian on both Workstation and Servers for many years. He started with Debian Woody and preferred the KDE desktop of it's time. Kevin began his self-taught venture into the UNIX world through Mac OS X as a gateway drug to a Linux Addict. He began learning about the UNIX command shell in the Darwin system. After he explored the Darwin UNIX shell, Kevin became very interested in this powerful set of technology and began to read many books on UNIX shells. He signed up for many UNIX shell accounts to continue his learning of the UNIX system. After Mac OS X, he briefly used Mandrake Linux and a LiveCD called Dyn:bolic. From Mandrake he switched over to Debian Woody very briefly. At the time, Kevin felt that Woody was very slow on his 400Mhz PC at the time. Application response times were slow, and the 2.2 Kernel was very limiting. He was also struggling to get his ATI Rage 128 graphics card to work with OpenGL. Upon looking into BSD systems, he learned that OpenBSD is from Canada and thought he would give it a try. He very much enjoyed the somewhat complex installation script and the package management system included. He went on to use OpenBSD 3.5 for about 1 year. The fact that OpenGL worked out of the box, and application response time was quick, is what kept him using OpenBSD. During the update to OpenBSD 3.7, many packages were changed and defaults for existing applications changed. Kevin was not pleased with the changes experienced in the new version. From this point, he began trying many other Linux distributions. For the longest time, he settled with SimplyMEPIS, which shipped in one of his Linux magazines. As SimplyMEPIS was Debian-based, more so with the early versions, learning his way around the package management system was very easy. He enjoyed that SimpyMEPIS came out of the box with all his mostly used applications, including a nice KDE desktop and Bootsplash re-compiled into the kernel. During his time with SimplyMEPIS, he did switch back and forth from SimplyMEPIS and Debian Woody/Sarge. It wasn't until Sarge that he was very pleased with how Debian came along and worked. Sarge came with the latest KDE at the time, of which SimplyMEPIS shipped months before. Now, Kevin has been using Debian fully since Sarge. He has used a VPS which is based on Sarge, Etch, and now Lenny.
