Weblog entry #1 for localhost

Enabling Debian Sarge on new SCSI servers

We're an ISP that uses Debian Sarge as the standard OS for our servers, we didnt have problems installing Sarge on some old servers.
Now we're facing problems with the new servers set, it wont detect any hard drive as the version of the SCSI controler is not supported.
How to resolve such problem ?

Find out what SCSI hardware you're looking for, then create a driver disk and use that during the installation...

Failing that replace the SCSI backplane/card(s) with known working ones.

What sort of server is it?

Last time I needed a crystal ball for this I used the Etch installer, which has some extra drivers over Sarges installer, and it will install Sarge. Whether this is a supported/supportable version of Sarge is anyones guess at this point.

Depends what it is!

The first step will be identifying the hardware, which we cannot do for you. Once you know the hardware you should look at buidling a kernel module for the Debian kernel - google will help you with details.

If you get very lucky somebody might have already done the job for you.

I have had this same exact problem with my HP desktops and servers. It will not auto detect my drives which are some form of SATA using SCSI emulation. What I have to do is manually select SATA_SIL and the select SD_MOD. It requires me to select both to get them working, don't ask me why, it just does. At that point the installer will kick me back to the menu and allow me to start partitioning the disks.

Well, as you're going through your install, it will come to a part where it will try and detect your disks, if it fails, then it will kick you into a menu where you can manually select disk drive drivers. Try selecting the two I listed above and then see if it will allow you to partition your disks.
