cd recovery: dares
Posted by mario on Thu 6 Sep 2007 at 03:23
Today I found dares, a package for cd recovery in debian.
Haven't tried it yet, I am VERY careful with my cds so I don't have a bad one to test it :)
Ncurses based: http://packages.debian.org/etch/dares
Qt based: http://packages.debian.org/etch/dares-qt

Also try dvdisaster and qpxtool packages. The latter one threats at media level, quite interesting. There is also one called cdck (but dvddisaster does the same with graphics on its own interface).

Thank you I'll try them.
Dares is not working for me on etch stable, it says:
------------------------
# dares -i /cdrom -s /root
dares 0.6.5 started at Fri Sep 7 02:23:48 2007
opening image /cdrom: ok
Could not load file magic database file 'magic', using default database
block 0 (0 files)
block 0: read(): 21 (Is a directory)
error: scanned 0 2k blocks, found 0 files
------------------------
I tried it on a PC and on a virtual machine (vmware in XP).
Anybody has any ideas? dependencies are installed
Depends: libc6 (>= 2.3.5-1), libmagic1, libncurses5 (>= 5.4-5)
as well as file. Thank you. Bye.
