I have noticed so many people seem to have not heard about htop but I think it to be a very valuable tool and brings all the information of top with all the interaction so many people have wanted for so long. So this is just an entry to attempt to get the awareness of the application up.

aptitude install htop

or

apt-get install htop

to try it out for yourself.

Well, it seems that 'htop' looks nice (at http://htop.sourceforge.net/index.php?page=screenshots). But is it realy more useful than 'top' and 'ps'?

it seems that you can interact with processes (kill, renice, etc) easier than in top

It's clear. And what about 'ps' with 'grep'? 'ps' and 'kill' commands have a number of options, and I thinks this is more reliable mechanism to manage processes. For example, if one will use 'kill' command to exactly kill some process, it's much better to use it with '-kill' option: 'kill -kill something'. This will do the same on almost any Unix-like system, unlike 'kill -9 something'.

I do mean also that the one of the strongest distinguishing features of the Unix is its non-interactive but imperative style of work. 'Just do it', yes? :-)

It might not be perfect for everyone, I just find it very useful for everyday tasks both on my desktops and my servers. It also has a rather eye pleasing interface in comparison to top which doesn't really matter, but its pleasant still the same

I’m partly agree with you. ‘htop’ looks like a good replacement for ‘top’. It looks really nice and ought to be more usable in comparison with the ‘top’ itself.

But I don’t realize why use ‘top’ in general. I’m using it occasionally to get a fast view for the most ‘heavy’ processes (on the top of the ‘top’ :-)), because ‘ps’ (with its different options) seems to be more useful. ‘htop’ (and ‘top’ too) is only the nice looking interface for ‘ps’, isn’t it?
