Weblog entry #1 for mkb

how to use LDAP with Evolution

I'm a newbie where LDAP is concerned but I see Evolution allows a user to share address books via LDAP. (It's having the same address book for diff machines running Evo that is the functionality I require - LDAP just seems to be one/the Evo way) However, having installed slapd I cannot work out how to configure things such that Evo creates/uses a LDAP address book. Does anybody have a step-by-step guide? Cheers, Michael

Hi,

I have this set up at home, I have used some different how-to's but all of them are written in French. I would be happy to write an article, but can't find the time and the patience, as some steps are still quite obscure for me.

What have you done until now?

Cheers,
Julien

ldap is quite a challenge to setup. It works really well, mind you, and once it's running you have nearly no troubles with it, but it has to run first :)

If you really want to understand LDAP then you should get yourself a copy of Gerry Carter's 'LDAP system administration' (http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/ldapsa/). Although it is a bit outdated, the knowledge you will win is priceless for a thourough understanding of what ldap is and does.

Obviously, http://www.openldap.org. They have quite a good quick starting guide, the mailing list is really good (provided you have done your homework first) and I know soon Howard Chu (main architect of openldap) will publish a book about it.

Good luck and happy googling for it :)

I've had a look at this on the weekend and now have basic, editable, address book functionality.

I still need to look into how to get the schemas to include support for Instant Messenger contacts, then I'll write something up here.
