A post on debian-mentors led me to Virtual Richard M Stallman, or vrms, which tallies the number of packages on your system that are non-free.

  Reason: Modifications problematic
  16 non-free packages, 1.1% of 1473 installed packages.
It seems RMS would not be too happy with me as 1.1 percent of the software I use isn't free I do feel however that its not a bad effort and I have Debian to thank for that. I could actually get by with no non-free packages if it weren't for tuxracer, foobillard and bzflag depending on an open gl capable video card driver for my Nvidia 6800, but even then my bios is proprietary and probably some other things I've not considered.

It is a point of principal, but on my own machines...

$ vrms
No non-free packages installed on derek! rms would be proud.

(Derek because it is a Dell - those who haven't seen 'Only Fools and Horses' are wondering why it isn't called Michael).

But then I'm not big on 3D games, and read my "non-free" content from the Web.

Album - if there was something that could easily be done with free software an HTML photo album would have been high on my list of candidates. Heck alongside specific free tools for doing it, some graphics tools I've used offer web album export as a bundled feature.

rar - hmm it seems I've survived a long time in computing without this format (there is always a certain ironic shiver when you download the 'tar.gz' file for a new archiving utility).

You might be able to replace unrar with unrar-free - if you're using an Unstable/Sid installation.

Having just read a section in the new book Debian System which discusses grep-dctrl and its variants (section 5.11.9) it occurred to me that I should be able to get a list of non-free packages installed on my system with tools already installed. This does the trick:
    grep-status --show Package --field=Section non-free \
    --and --field=Status 'ok installed'
