Iceweasel and sid blues

Iceweasel magically appeared on my desktop this evening, and told me half my extensions were no longer compatible.

Still can't figure out how to make the mozilla VLC plugin work, last night it was Firefox 1.5 I couldn't get it to work with, today it is Iceweasel. I think it is "just broken", and I still can't figure out the content handling interface in the Debian firefox build (i.e. how to use Firefox to map mimetypes to applications, rather than relying on GNOME, or the GNOME integration). Tell me it is just Sid, and not just me?

Adding to the fun, I thought I'd use the new "RSS feed" integration to call "lifearea-add-feed" to add feeds from the magic orange square. I think it must be Iceweasel, as typing "liferea-add-feed <url>" works, even if "<url>" isn't an RSS feed.

Sometime I think Sid as a desktop was a very bad idea, but perhaps I just need more people to compare notes with, to pin down the bugs.

Sid as a desktop is a very bad idea if you want things to "just work". Thats why it is also called "unstable".

I've never tried to use full-blown sid as a desktop. testing is just about perfect for me, though (iceweasel isn't in etch yet...), and i can pull in the few things i decide i really need (and am willing to put up with bugginess from) directly from sid.

Sid on a desktop is certainly a learning experince.

I've been using it on my systems for a long time now, and apart from a few mistakes with graphics drivers and X setup I find that most problems are usually solvable with the aid of a good irc client and the ability to search google - even if that involves using lynx/links!

I guess I'm a little careful in that I have a couple of systems and I only make significant updates to one system, then the rest if I don't see problems.

Steve
