Debian, NFS and OpenOffice

I have an issue that looks like;
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=392299
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=391911
Currently the server has the userspace NFS server, which if I am reading the bug report right doesn't work with OpenOffice?! (seems odd).
Seems I have to set kernel space NFS up to get proper locking behaviour, or switch network file system, which will mean a kernel rebuild.
I see this as time to sort the network file system properly. What network file system do people recommended for sharing "/home" over ethernet. Anyone else seeing the "can't close OpenOffice" with the user space kernel?
It use to work fine until recently (openoffice.org2??).
