Dotdeb.org Sarge to Etch

Got an initial response from Guillaume suggesting he will maintain the unofficial dotdeb repository for Sarge as long as he has servers running Sarge with those packages. His estimate is that will be about 3 months.
Before that he expects to migrate the packages he covers to Etch.
This leaves two obvious upgrade paths;
1) Switch from Sarge + Dotdeb, to the supported PHP and MySQL versions in Etch, now they are at least at similar major revisions.
2) Wait for the Etch packages in Dotdeb, and migrate to those.
I'd prefer to do go with option 1, although "anonymous" said it wasn't pleasant in response to my earlier blog entry, he skipped the all important details!
Option 2 is probably the simpler option, but leaves less time for testing, and may have us relying on third party packages when we could be using official packages. Although the dotdeb packages haven't let me down yet, I think it pays to run with the pack where possible, especially where we are pulling in binary or proprietary libraries from Zend and other third parties to integrate with the PHP version in use.
Less obvious upgrade paths involve offering the maintainers incentives to keep Sarge supported as long as you need it.

I'm in the same situation. I would rather switch away from dotdeb and just use the official packages for MySQL and a few other packages that I current use dotdeb for. However, I'm a bit concerned about possible problems caused by switching from dotdeb to Etch.
