Flu or Cold?

The Common Cold Centre at Cardiff University claims you can't tell a flu from a cold on the basis of symptoms alone.

Many folks, including I note senior folk in the NHS, claim that influenza is inherently worse.

The truth probably lies somewhere in between.

Since we don't identify the virus involved in most peoples minor infections, there is ample scope for confirmation bias where the doctor calls any cold with lots of aches and fever "flu".

Whatever the "cold virus" that is going around England this winter may be it comes with plenty of aches, fever, and delirium. I so hope I'm over the worst of it.

Tell me about it... I had two doses of flu/cold in December. My better half had one dose in between mine and is currently suffering with a second dose.

I just got hit with the flu here in the states. It was awful! Fever 103 deg F. Severe body aches, chills, nausea. Luckily mine only lasted a few days.

Good luck!

39.4C, that's rather warm. I hope you are feeling better now?

I had yet another cold at the tail end of last week, sore throat and a thumping headache all Saturday, but thankfully it's not exploded into a full blown infection and I'm not too bad at the moment.

I see you are a KDE user, me too. Most Debian users seem to be GNOME users, but like you I prefer KDE. It's not that I dislike GNOME, it's just that at one point I found it much easier to turn off more things in KDE than GNOME. Now I know KDE so much better than GNOME, I can't be bothered to learn GNOME.

Yes, I am much better now, thank you.

I just couldn't get comfortable with Gnome. I haven't used it in a few years though. It just didn't have a fluid-type feel in regards to usability. Everything was so choppy. If I wanted to change options, I'd have to open a million different programs. And the menu at the top just doesn't sit well with me. It's not the fact that it's at the top, it's the arrangement of menu items. Eh. Seemed a little like MacOS to me. I'm not a mac user and don't like the feel and uh... always having to jump through hoops to get something to run.

I prefer things to - just work. That's the main reason I switched from Windows. I was tired of the virii, security issues, CRASHING, etc. Not to mention the huge amount of money it requires to get a good working computer up and running with all your favorite programs. Nope. I refuse to spend vast amounts of money just to use a computer.

The better antivirus makes you have a yearly subscription and that costs like $50/year. Having to do updates constantly, then those break your system functionality. Mainly, I hate monopolies. Microsoft does not take care of its customers. They release updates constantly and those are useless. I don't know. It's a huge retarded cycle.

I prefer open source, due to the vast array of people working to improve a product. Monopolies only release a new version every few years and even then it's super buggy.

I read some of the Windows Vista EULA... It basically says that any electronic data you have on your computer will be transmitted to the authorities if it's unlawful.

Now isn't that a breach of your privacy rights? I think so. Although, here in the states, we don't have privacy like the Constitution states, due to President Bush-wack's legislation. I can't remember the name of the law but it strips us of all inherent privacy due to the terrorist attacks in 2001.

Anyway. That's my take on life. :P
