Weblog entry #232 for simonw
There has been a lot of silly moaning, and some very poor trolling on the local GLUG list about the Firefox->Iceweasel rename.
It hasn't caused me any issues at all until today, when my partner reported that NatWest online banking didn't work, and it turns out NatWest are relying on the version token in the User Agent string.
Quick check with the "User Agent Switcher" add-on confirmed the cause, and editing in "about:config" the "general.useragent.extra.firefox" replacing "Iceweasel" with "Firefox" does the trick permanently.
I failed to find a useful contact on the NatWest website to suggest they treat it as the names as synonyms. There was some suggestion at MJR blog list of online banks that work with free software that others have been here before - clearly IceWeasel is a little too free for those bankers.
Myself, I abandoned NatWest Online banking because they had a completely over-the-top security scheme, and very silly rules on when and how transactions could be scheduled. The security scheme seems to have improved somewhat, but most normal folk will still have to write some of their security credentials down somewhere. I may see if my memory has improved - but I'm doubtful.
