Argh Microsoft

Seems the action I want to perform on a remote Windows machine is disabled by design (so I have to do a reboot instead), thank you Microsoft.

Your story was well-featured, full of details and relevant information. Thank you, this enlightening document has convinced me to never touch a Windows system again.

In this case I wanted to stop the "Terminal Services" service on Windows XP Home.

There are a number of reports that the Terminal Services service can slow XP down due to it causing a continuous stream of IO requests from the LSASS.EXE process for reasons unknown. I can confirm that stopping this service, did prevent LSASS.EXE producing a continuous stream of IO requests on the PC I was checking.

The service was shown as "Started" and set to "Manual" start-up. I stopped the one running service depending on this service, but the GUI just leaves the buttons grayed out for the "Terminal Services" service.

Microsoft knowledge base reports that Terminal Services service can not be manipulated, and that this is by design, with no explanation.

In this case rebooting wasn't too painful, but not all boxes reboot quickly, or come back afterwards. In the end three reboots were required for troubleshooting a minor issue with IO performance, more were suggested but they could be deferred.

But I'm surprised anyone here needs another reason to never touch a Windows system again.

The other day I was trying to fix a virus-infected windows box, and found that the virus had turned off the task manager and the "folder options" menu selection in the file browser (so you can't make it show hidden files?). i thought the virus did some serious hacking there...but no, it was just a registry change.

Ignoring many of the issues that Windows has, the making you reboot for what seems to be a trivial change, is one that over time you learn to really hate!

On a (very good) Red Hat training course I once took, they had a mantra that "rebooting is a sign of weakness" - as far as they were concerned you only rebooted a box to change the running kernel.
