What does GNOME do between displaying the panels, and loading screen backdrop and contents of Desktop folder?
Better yet how would I find this out for myself sensibly?
I ask because I set up a relatively slow box for a friend, Debian Lenny, clean install of GNOME, and it takes eternity to draw the backdrop, when the panels are already working. I noticed after my own much faster desktop seems to thrash the hard disk at this point?!
I tried out the LXDE, but found that whilst it loads very quickly (compared to GNOME) once loaded it didn't seem to save me memory or CPU especially. So when I finally reinstall my desktop I'll probably used GNOME again. Noticed also that the Desktop launchers have changed between my desktop and a new GNOME install, so I guess I need to figure out what ".g*" directories I need to keep and which need to die.

Long ago in order to enjoy a speedy desktop using Pentium I or II's
I have only used Window Maker.
Window Maker is configurable and is quick.
There is no Start button or "Task bar"
I do not know why or what the advantage is with Gnome or KDE , etc.
Perhaps someone else can explain why or what Gnome or KDE does or provides.
There must be a reason since so many people use them.
