Oddity xinetd

Squeeze box running svn via xinetd. xinetd exited with the message "Exiting..." during the installation of today's security updates ( libapr1 and postfix ). Restarting it and all seems well but why?
xinet issues the "Exiting..." message when it is killed, so my best guess is one of the scripts incorrectly calculated a pid to kill and got xinetd rather than the one it was aiming at.

runit and systemd both offer much better approaches to service management.
