email admin rant

Spamhaus have added one of our IP addresses because it hosts free web content, and that is sometimes abused. They have done this twice in a couple of weeks. On the second occasion most of the free web host accounts in the listing were already cancelled and returning 404 pages. Why they list IP addresses for web content, abused in web comment spam, in a list for blocking email is anyone's guess. I know they add additional IP addresses, but it seems silly to me if they want to minimize their false positive score.
So I switched outbound email to a new IP address to avoid their stupidity, and pretty much the first email through is rejected by BTConnect. As far as I can see Microsoft are operating a whitelist policy for email servers - contact us manually if you want to run an email server. I guess BT servers, so Microsoft rules apply, but the message is in English only. Mostly resolved that by taking client off BTConnect for email - they'll be happier with someone who tries to make their email work.
So today the antispam measures are clearly far worse than the spam problem, possibly including some I deploy myself. We caught cellgate.btcellnet.net because the Perl script couldn't relate the names and servers used to "O2mail.co.uk", and yes BTCellnet was rebranded in 2002 and isn't part of BT now as far as I know, but that was probably a bit harsh.
