Thunderbird global indexing

Seeing lousy Thunderbird performance on indexing messages. Which slows down the apparent fetching and filtering of messages.
Tools>Activity Manager
Suggests 11 messages indexed in 13 seconds.
Machine has 8GB of RAM.
global index file was: 237704192
recreated is was: 105315328
Need to wait to see if this impacts performance. On another machine (XP not Wheezy) I see similar issues but excluded the folder with 22,000 bounce messages from indexing on that one - which will probably help.
